The Ongoing Research

The ongoing research is to explore how indigenous musicians communicate their perspectives of indigenous culture and issues to audiences through self-presentation on social media for rethinking the self-identity.

The indigenous music became a dialogue field between musicians and listeners, from which it could be heard that the consultations between indigenous peoples and other groups in Taiwan during each colonised period.

Since most of the indigenous singer-songwriters with cultural intentions perform themselves through social media, they communicate culture to other people. As an online community platform, social media has a function of interpersonal communication to the contemporary indigenous music community. Thus, the purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between music and culture in indigenous society to acquire innovation found in contemporary Taiwan.

To locate the soundscape of indigenous music in the virtual community in Taiwan and to depict the cartography of the communication between Taiwanese contemporary indigenous music and the social media, this research will explore the music culture of indigenous musicians on social media in contemporary Taiwan. The following research questions provide a means for obtaining a holistic view of contemporary Taiwanese indigenous music: How do indigenous musicians in Taiwan communicate their identity and culture through musical appropriation, collaboration, and self-presentation online?

To depict the cartography of the communication between Taiwanese contemporary indigenous music and the social media, and to explore how indigenous musicians convey their identity and culture through musical appropriation, collaboration and the self-presentation of their daily lives online to their audiences, the methodology adopted for this research will be in-depth interviews and digital ethnography.

Indigenous people in Taiwan reconstruct their identity in the online world and experience new ways of interacting through participation. In this process, new cultures and societies continue to emerge and they give people a distinct approach to imagining the world. This research discovers a new orientation for positioning the new indigenous identity, which is integrated with the contemporary indigenous culture, through exploring the interaction between indigenous music and media.

半「原」形計畫

每個人都是一個半圓形，終其一生在尋找另外的半圓形。而擁有Payrang（漢人）與Amis（阿美族）血緣的我是半「原」形，試著透過文字研究來完滿那個原住民身份認同消失的半「原」形。身處臺灣的原住民族其實也是一個半「原」形，追尋在臺灣被壓抑已久的認同，以及試著走向世界與其他國家的原住民族連結，來完整成一個圓形。

這是一個具延續性原住民音樂書寫計畫，起點是一份正在撰寫的博士論文。這份研究以當代原住民音樂人如何透過音樂內容和社群媒體傳遞文化和思想為主軸，探討原住民音樂人如何重新思考當代台灣原住民的身份認同。

動機？

追朔媽媽的原生文化，試著更靠近她一點。

媽媽在隆昌長大，成年後為了家計前往台北工作，於工作的時候與爸爸相識，進而相戀結婚。他們結婚的過程並不順遂，媽媽的原住民身份讓她受到奶奶的反對，儘管爸爸堅持和媽媽結婚，但在傳統社會觀念下，嫁進去的媳婦還是經歷了許多的歧視和霸凌。我的成長過程中，雖然媽媽並沒有刻意不提台東的生活和阿美族文化，但也不怎麼強調，因此，就算我習慣阿美族的食物，小時候也會回台東掃墓（外公外婆過世得早），聽媽媽說母語，但我仍對這個文化一無所知。所以很想靠近媽媽一些，也想找回媽媽的認同，並延續下來。

為什麼音樂？

由於我從小學習音樂，在音樂上獲得許多，理解在聽音樂、演奏、演唱和創作音樂的過程中有許多的感受和情緒會透過音樂傳遞出去，而音樂在原住民文化是這麼的重要，因此，在決定探討原住民身份認同時，原住民音樂人成為我的首要目標。因為我能夠理解音樂與文化和身份的連結，也明白原住民在傳播自身文化時，那種帶點壓抑和傲氣的感受。

為什麼社群媒體？

因為希望研究當代的台灣，有別於過去黑膠、卡帶和CD時代的串流、數位和社群時代。

原住民的展演已不再只是透過節慶的祭典和舞蹈，甚至是社群媒體的形象，音樂的混雜，和世界其他原住民族的接軌，這些都使得當代的台灣原住民音樂人是有一種別於過去的自我認同。所以，除了都市和原鄉的議題之外，我深信還有更多的認同值得重新思考，到底當代的原住民音樂人是怎麼被當代的環境影響的，文化是怎麼透過音樂傳遞的，社群媒體的形象是如何呈現的，在這些傳播音樂和文化的過程中，原住民音樂人是怎麼獲取認同的，這都是研究的目標。

為什麼談認同？

過去的原住民認同總是談論單一的原住民族整體或者個人對於自己族別的認同，但我深知認同本身是複雜的，成長過程中的每個因素都可能影響認同，除了大原住民族的認同之外，個人和整體的交互作用，以及和整個台灣環境的相互影響，都深深地影響了「認同」，當然數位化時代是重要的環境因素之一，包括社群媒體、串流音樂等。原住民的展演已不再只是透過節慶的祭典和舞蹈，甚至是社群媒體的形象，音樂的混雜，和世界其他原住民族的接軌，這些都使得當代的台灣原住民音樂人有一種別於過去的自我認同。

博士論文和延續計畫的動機？

研究於我而言是一種關於認同思想的探究，是邏輯思考的練習，是我和媽媽在原住民認同的橋樑，也是一個在都市成長的半原形青年，尋找自我，關注原住民文化和議題的起點。

或許論文的價值歸類於學術的貢獻，但原住民的文化遠比想像的還深，原住民音樂除了維護傳統和保存語言等的功能之外，藝術和風格的討論也是必要的，尤其是每一個原住民音樂人的故事，每一首歌的背後，每一個被創作的素材，都是原住民文化的痕跡，所以我期許自己不要止步於論文。我相信每個故事都會成為一個動人的篇章，讓台灣的原住民文化能夠透過音樂和當代的媒體環境傳遞出去。希望能夠為台灣當代原住民音樂文化盡一份心力，尤其能自省地以原住民的觀點出發，而非挾持於流行音樂文化的脈絡之下。

半「原」型計畫第一步

博士論文半「原」形計畫的第一步，將以深度訪談和音樂與社群媒體分析來探討原住民音樂人如何重新思考當代台灣原住民的身份認同。

於我而言，這樣的訪談比較像是一份接地氣的討教與學習。再來反思一個成長於漢人家庭的都市青年，該如何找尋自己的認同，什麼是原住民的認同？怎麼透過音樂找認同？又怎麼被當代環境影響？

目前的想法是，在論文完成後，首先組織這一年時間的訪談整理，或許整理成一篇篇的故事，或許整理成專題，或許影音製作，或許整理後再和每位受訪者溝通協調，因為延續的計畫將會是希望持續經營的，或者展成一個「自媒體」，用當代的方式呈現。

希望能夠跨出台灣，所以透過計畫出來的文字肯定中英語言都有，後續會再去試著和台灣以及國際媒體合作。另外期許將可能的每個故事中會有的原住民族語，用註腳的方式來成為一個能夠累積的實際文化內容。
